If you have ever been a teacher, you already know this: soft skills matter. Soft skills, also called employability skills, 21st century skills, or interpersonal skills, are the traits and habits that are not written into a job description or listed as a job responsibility, but they are skills that employers identify as important to an employee’s success or longevity. Well developed soft skills are highly desirable to all employers, but did you know that soft skills are actually great predictors of a student’s academic success?
Schools that build soft skills into their curriculum produce students with higher grades, less absences, and fewer discipline issues. Students who attend schools with a focus on soft skills also graduate more students who go onto college. Some school programs, especially Career and Technical Education (CTE) programs make soft skills a major piece of how students are graded.
Obviously, soft skills matter, but how do parents and guardians ensure that their children are getting both exposure to soft skills and practical experience in applying soft skills?
This is where Krav Maga can play an important role in soft skill development.
Principles of Krav Maga support soft skills, such as dependability, team work, communication, flexibility. Each week, we encourage students to work toward black belt excellence, which means that we don’t just focus on the hard skills of Krav Maga; we focus on the soft skills necessary to be good contributors in all environments they are in.
